BBC News has featured one of Carbon Clear's carbon offset projects as part of its popular 'In Pictures' Series.
'In pictures: Life-saving stoves in Congo' showcases images of the Energy Saving Cook Stove project in D.R. Congo, implemented in partnership with Mercy Corps. The series shows how woman and children living in refugee camps have benefited from increased security as a result of the stoves. Previously they were having to walk miles to collect fuelwood, and regularly encountered threats of rape and physical violence. The project is also helping combat rampant deforestation in the area.

This project operates in El Fashir town, North Darfur, approximately 1,200 km west-southwest of Khartoum. The area suffers from desertification and drought, creating serious shortages of firewood. Conflict has contributed to energy shortages. The population comprises of 198,391 local residents and 29,645 internally displaced people, the majority of which earn a low income.

Traveling by plane, for example, causes carbon dioxide to be emitted into the atmosphere, so travelers can pay a specialist to offset those emissions some other way — perhaps by planting vegetation or installing renewable-energy technologies. It all sounds reasonable.
