Carbon Clear’s carbon offset credits come from high-quality carbon reduction projects that help the environment while benefitting local communities.

We provide certified emissions reduction (CER) and verified emissions reduction (VER) credits that meet the requirements of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Gold Standard.

Carbon Clear's carbon offsets come from renewable energy and energy efficiency projects (at least 80% of the total), and community tree planting projects (up to 20%). Supporting clean energy projects in developing countries helps local communities make the transition to a low-carbon future, while tree planting reflects the fact that approximately 20% of global carbon emissions come from deforestation.

Wherever possible, we work directly with the local project team instead of buying carbon offsets from intermediaries. It's important that customers' money is put to good use – in 2007, more than 75% of our revenue was used to develop our projects.

All of Carbon Clear’s carbon credits must meet our strict quality screens. These include:

  • Additionality – showing that the project would not have happened without carbon credit funding. We use the CDM Tool for Additionality to evaluate our projects
  • Third party validation and verification – to prove that the promised carbon reductions are real
  • Sustainable livelihood benefits – providing social benefits for local communities.

The 2008 Ends Guide to Carbon Offsets identified Carbon Clear as a Quality Offset Provider – one of only 14 quality retail providers out of 170 companies surveyed worldwide.
