Energy efficiency – Introduction of fuels and appliances with lower greenhouse gas emissions (validation expected 2010)
Description of Project
Based in the Darfur region of Sudan, this project provides modern stoves to low-income families allowing them to replace their traditional 3-stone fires. While El Fasher town is safe for residents and aid workers, most of them must rely on usustainably harvested wood fuel transported by truck. The efficient stove programme is administered by local women’s cooperatives; by the community for the community. The modern stove reduces greenhouse gas emissions by facilitating the switch away from wood and charcoal to more efficient fuels and cook-stoves. The switch to efficient fuels reduces indoor air pollution and improves health for the participating families.

Additionality Test
Established using the CDM additionality tool. Poor households in Sudan’s remote towns are unable to afford the high upfront cost of LPG stoves and fuel canisters. The project provides bulk buying, micro-credit and technical assistance to local women’s groups to make improved fuels and stoves accessible to poor households.
Social and environmental considerations
In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project helps to:
- Improve the livelihoods of poor families and address energy poverty by switching to a cleaner and more cost-effective cooking fuel;
- Reduce indoor air pollution from burning wood and charcoal, thereby improving the health and quality of life for women and of children;
- Contribute to environmental conservation by reducing pressure on dwindling forest resources in Northern Darfur.
LPG can help the shift towards a low-carbon economy because the fuel features significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions than other locally available fuels like dung, firewood, and charcoal. In addition, the project reduces the insecurity that women and girls face while collecting fuel wood outside of town.
