Investment in green energy investments reaches trillion-dollar mark

Over $1 trillion has been invested in renewable energy, energy efficiency and smart meter technology since 1994, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF).

The report shows that annual clean energy investment has increased nearly five-fold since 2004, rising from $52bn to $243bn last year.

BNEF chief executive Michael Liebreich said "The trillionth-dollar milestone shows that the world is not waiting for a deal on climate in order to start turning the super-tanker away from fossil fuels," he said. "Another five years of investment growth at the same compound rates and the world will have broken the back of emissions growth."

2011 is expected to show another record year of growth, driven by solar thermal projects, offshore wind financings, and national renewable energy programmes, such as that in India.
