Carbon Offset Project:
Biomass Co-generation, Brazil
Project Location
São Paulo State, Brazil
Credit Type
Voluntary Carbon Standard
Total Emission Reductions
385,000 tonnes of CO2e between 2002-2007
Additionality Test
Assessed using the CDM Tool for Demonstration of Additionality. Project net present value was negative in the absence of carbon credit funding, indicating the management should not go ahead. The project’s economic benefits are insufficient to cover the capital and economic costs of the new technology. The project is not considered common practice in the region, as most other factories in the region use unsustainably harvested wood.
Social and Environmental Considerations
No environmental impact assessment (EIA) is required by the Brazilian National Environmental Council, based on the size of the generation unit. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project reduces the volume of material going to landfill each year, and reduces odours associated with decomposing sawdust and woodchip residues.
