Carbon Offset Project:
Hydropower, Turkey
Project Location
Adana Province, Turkey
Total Emission Reductions
510,000 tonnes of CO2e
Additionality Test
The project faces barriers due to the unavailability of finance, which made the financial returns of the project relatively unattractive in the absence of carbon credit revenues, compared with alternatives. The project also faced technological barriers due to its remote location, which resulted in a shortage of skilled staff to construct and operate the plant.
Social and Environmental Considerations
Unlike large scale hydroelectric projects, the technology does not require the construction of a dam, therefore avoiding negative impacts of flooded land or displacement of communities. Also because it is a 'run-of-river' hydropower plant it has no negative impact on the local ecology and surrounding area. This hydro project has a strong sustainable development focus and has had a variety of benefits to the local area including the creation of jobs and better facilities for schools. The project improves energy security in an area which frequently experiences power shortages and low quality electricity from the grid. The environmental benefits of the project include an extensive tree planting programme and also slope protection to avoid extensive erosion of the land
