Renewable energy – Introduction of biomass fuels to replace fossil fuel sources

This project uses rice husks to provide heat and electricity to a textile mill in India. The use of biomass for power eliminates reliance on fossil fuels, while providing additional income to local farmers. This project was the first of its kind in India’s Punjab region.

Established using the CDM additionality tool. The project was the first of its kind in the region’s textile sector. The use of an unfamiliar technology and the financial costs of business interruption meant that management would not have gone ahead with the project without the expectation of carbon finance.

The project provides added income to local farmers from the sale of their rice husks, which would otherwise be burnt in the field. Local elected representatives were included in the stakeholder consultation process and expressed strong support for the project. The textile plant’s environmental management system is ISO 14001 certified, and the plant meets or exceeds local environmental requirements. Precipitators have been installed to capture dust, smokestack collectors capture fly ash silencers reduce noise pollution, and a cooling water system has been employed to minimise thermal water pollution.
