Carbon Offset Project:
Run-of-river Hydropower, Colombia
Project Location
Antioquia Department, Colombia
Credit Type
Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS)
Total Emission Reductions
50,000 tonnes CO2e
Additionality Test
Due to the unavailability of finance and Colombian project developers’ lack of familiarity with hydropower plant construction, the project would not have gone ahead in the absence of carbon credit revenues. This project showcases renewable energy, which also reduces Colombia’s dependence of fossil fuels and increases their energy security.
Social and Environmental Considerations
Unlike traditional hydroelectric dams, run-of-river hydropower diverts only a portion of the river’s flow, significantly reducing the social and environmental impacts. The International Rivers Network, an advocacy group that opposes large dam construction, actively supports the use of run-of-river projects. Job opportunities for skilled and non-skilled labour from the surrounding communities were created during the construction phase. Long-term employment has been created for 1 chief engineer, 3 operating technicians, 2 security guards, and supporting office and clerical personnel.
